Veil of Mystery is Book 1 of the Suspense Fun Thriller with Faith series by Mark Oliver. Siblings Jennifer and Jett Johnson run Johnson Tech in San Diego. When the ruthless Virelli launches a hostile takeover and young Mason is kidnapped, the fight becomes personal. This short, clean novel (about 118 pages) reads well in a single club meeting cycle.

Family and loyalty

  1. Jennifer and Jett are siblings who also run a company together. How does being family help them, or complicate things, when the pressure builds?
  2. The book description says that once Mason is kidnapped, "the fight becomes personal." How did the stakes change for you as a reader when the threat moved from the business to a child?
  3. Where do you see loyalty tested in the story, whether at work, in the family, or among friends?

Faith as a compass

  1. The book describes faith as the characters' compass. Where did you notice faith shaping a choice, a reaction, or a moment of hope?
  2. Did the faith elements feel natural to the characters and the suspense? What makes faith in fiction feel authentic rather than added on?
  3. When have you leaned on faith in a situation that felt out of your control?

Suspense and right vs. wrong

  1. A hostile takeover and a kidnapping are two very different kinds of threat. Which one created more tension for you, and why?
  2. What makes an antagonist like Virelli believable? What do you think drives someone to win at any cost?
  3. The characters race against time. How did the pace affect your reading? Was there a moment you couldn't put the book down?
  4. This is a clean suspense novel, without profanity or explicit content. How does that shape the way tension is built? What does the story gain?

Place

  1. The story moves through San Diego landmarks such as the Hotel del Coronado, the USS Midway and Torrey Pines. How did the real settings add to the experience? Have you visited any of them?

Looking ahead

  1. If you were in Jennifer's or Jett's position, what would you have done the same, and what differently?
  2. Veil of Mystery opens a series. What do you hope to see next for the Johnson family? (The series continues with Veil of the 4th of July, Veil of Thanksgiving and Veil of Christmas.)

For reflection

  • Psalm 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." (Shared here for group reflection; it is not quoted from the book.) How does this verse speak to the kind of crisis the Johnson family faces?
  • Leaders: the questions above are written from the book's description and avoid spoilers. Feel free to add your own questions about specific scenes.
